Arquitecto, doctor por la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) y fundador de External Reference, estudio internacional galardonado con premios como el Prix Versailles, el World Architecture Festival (WAF), los SBID Awards y el Ro Plastic Prize. Con más de 17 años de trayectoria, Zappulla lidera proyectos que exploran el diseño paramétrico, la fabricación digital, la bioarquitectura y la inteligencia artificial aplicada a la arquitectura. Bajo su dirección, el estudio se ha consolidado como un referente global en la creación de espacios innovadores que fusionan tecnología, arte y sostenibilidad. Sus obras han sido exhibidas en la Biennale di Venezia, el Museo MAXXI o Expo Dubái 2020. Zappulla dirige el Máster en Diseño Experiencial de LCI Barcelona y es profesor en el IAAC. Entre sus proyectos más emblemáticos se encuentran la Nova Bocana de Barcelona, el Pabellón de España en la Expo Dubái o el hub experiencial WOW en Madrid.
External Reference is a multidisciplinary studio dedicated to turning spaces into emotional experiences through architecture and design. Since its establishment in 2007, the firm has undertaken international projects across a wide range of fields, including urban interventions, architecture, retail, hospitality, exhibition and product design. The studio approaches all its projects with a focus on innovation and technological research, drawing from a broad range of external inspirations, such as contemporary art, sciences, and philosophy. Among its notable projects are the new seafront of Nova Bocana on Barcelona's beach; the exhibition route of the Spain Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020; the phygital marketplace WOW in Madrid; gastronomic spaces like restaurants Alkimia, Casa Moritz; trendsetting brand physical conceptual spaces such as VICIO and La Manso; as well as one of its recent research and design projects with innovative and sustainable initiative: the Pure Plants, a family of 3D printed purifying sculptures, winner of the international Ro Plastic Prize.
