João Albuquerque started his career as a BIGster at BIG Copenhague in 2008, and then he moved to Barcelona in 2019 to support the establishment of a solid foundation for BIG Barcelona. He became the Design Director of the Barcelona office and in 2021 he was named partner. Recently, João has lead projects with strong focus in sustainability across Spain, Portugal, the Mediterranean Sea and South America. João works effectively in BIG's creative environment, regularly leading design teams in projects which range from tenders to schematic design phases and design developement. He graduated with a MAA at the IAAC in Barcelona, and his thesis project was exhibited at the 2011 Beijing Biennale and at the Barcelona Design Museum.
BIG is a group of architects, designers, engineers and thinkers which operate at the fields of architecture, urbanism, landscaping, engineering, research and developement, which offices at Copenhague, New York, London, Barcelona, Los Angeles and Shenzhen. BIG completes buildings which are as programmatically and technically innovative as they are cost and resource conscious, demonstrating a high sensibility to the particular demands of the site, the context and the program. Their current projects include Google Charleston East and Google King’s Cross, the new facilities for Google employees at Mountain View, EE. UU., and London, United Kingdom; an urban masterplan which introduces an habitable neighborhood at Aarhus harbor, in Denmark; Terminus Future City, an office campus which integrates futurist technology as a part of sustainable development at China; or 3D-printed habitats at the moon.
