In this talk we will explore the transformation of multipurpose spaces that combine retail, workspace and hospitality, highlighting the integral design of experiences and the impact on people. We will focus on the use of innovative materials and finishes, and how collaboration with artisans and artists elevates the functionality and aesthetics of these spaces. We will discuss case studies and projects, achieving a balance between practicality and beauty, and how these can influence the perception and use of space. This talk will offer an inspiring and practical vision to innovate in the creation of hybrid, versatile and contemporary spaces.
Questions for participants:
Have you worked on a project where you combined seemingly opposing or very different functions in a single space? How did you resolve the coexistence of those activities in the same environment?
Think of a contemporary or historical case of a multifunctional space that has made an impact on you or that you consider innovative. What aspects of the design allow the activities to develop efficiently and harmoniously?
Are there examples from your own experience where a non-traditional space has served a different purpose than it was originally intended? How was that functional change successfully achieved?
What materials, technologies or sustainable solutions do you think are key to achieving spaces that blend functions while meeting today's environmental needs?
Some case studies:
- The “Tate Modern” Power Station in London (2000) - Herzog & de Meuron.
- The Library and Cultural Center of the University of Eindhoven (2014) - Meyer en Van Schooten Architecten.
- Bjerkel Power Station in Copenhagen - BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group)
- Bitcoin Mining Bathhouse in New York (an Arab bathhouse that uses Bitcoin mining to heat its pools).
